Circle Game - and Fun at the Fair

So....moving along on our retro roadtrip....who doesn't love a great fair?!!

Even before we had kids, my husband and I have always been into country fairs and small town carnivals. Kitschy to the max, yes, but great old-fashioned fun. We also love the old little amusement parks - think old wooden roller coasters, ferris wheels, arcade games, old-fashioned carousels....

And thankfully, our kids have happily followed along with our adventures. Save one trip to LegoLand, we have avoided the big theme parks, Disney, etc and have stuck with the small old-time places - some of the coolest parks are over 100 years old!

Over the years I have taken hundreds of pictures at fairs and amusement parks. The lights, the neon, the old painted attractions have always fascinated me in their worn but colorful gaudiness. Have you ever looked closely at the faces of the animals on old kids' rides or the wooden horses on older carousels? Some of them are a lot freakier-looking than you might think!

I revisit my photos from time to time and get inspired to paint a few more pieces for my ongoing "Fairs and Carnivals" collection. I love painting old carousel horses - the expression on their faces, the movement indicated in their positioning and detailing. Loved this horse's face - this is one of those paintings that just flew off the brush. I have to admit the Joni Mitchell song was stuck in my mind the entire time, so I had to name it "Circle Game"

"And the seasons they go round and round
And the painted ponies go up and down
We're captive on the carousel of time
We can't return we can only look behind
From where we came
And go round and round and round
In the circle game"

In progress photos:

I am excited to be showing this painting and about a dozen others next weekend at the Melrose Arts Festival! This is may first year participating - I am very excited to have been juried in to show with 43 other awesome artists. If you are local stop by!

Frozen Delite - Touch of Summer during the Winter!

Frozen Delite
10 x 8 inches
acrylic on canvas

For this painting we take a little trip to summer time - think carnival rides, roller coasters, amusement parks. And yes, giant fake ice cream cones! Besides the huge cone, I was drawn to the garish colors and the fun shapes in this ice cream stand. All the light bulbs sure proved to be a challenge, but I am glad I stuck with it.

Interesting in purchasing this piece of summer for yourself? See more information here.

Old signs! Even older buildings! Neon! Carnival games!

Can you tell I had fun with this one?

Lots of my favorite things at the Salem Willows in Salem, MA - I hope to do more paintings from there when I return to my Fair and Carnival Series. But for now, this one will be part of the "Scenes from the North Shore" that I take to Pop Gallery in Gloucester later this month.

I hope to have some exciting news to share about a featured exhibition coming up soon......

Nightmare SOLD

Nightmare
Carnival Series
3.5 x 2.5 inches
acrylic on watercolor paper
SOLD

Okay...I am not a clown hater - but this creepy clown (actually part of a GAME!) has been on my mind ever since I saw it! I knew it would show up at least a few times in my paintings. I needed to take a break from the exhibit pieces I have been doing to do a little quick painting. I decided it was time to get that clown out of my brain - so here he is.

Did you know that the fear of clowns is called "Coulrophobia"?

They're off.....

I finished framing and packaged these three paintings and sent them off to West Virginia. Of course I forgot to take a picture of them framed! I like the way they look together, and I am looking forward to doing more paintings to add to the series.

The theme of the exhibition is Parks & Recreation. I hope that people feel that they fit the theme.....even though it makes sense in my head, I'm never quite sure what people are going to think!

Ticket to Ride - Carnival Series Painting

Ticket to Ride
6x6 inches
acrylic on canvas

Still putting the finishing touches on this one. This is for the upcoming Spring Show - together with the other 6x6 paintings I did with a carnival/amusement park theme ("Carousel Captive" and "Caterpillar Coaster").

In the summer we spend a lot of time going to old-fashioned fairs and carnivals with the kids. I am totally fascinated by the colors and the sounds, and also the graphics on the old rides and signage. Incredible color, yet rundown looking. Everything is brightly painted - even the ride controls and power cords seem to be a part of the color scheme. And some of the painted characters on the kiddie rides are truly creepy! Anyhow - I have many more ideas of things I what to paint on this same theme, so I'm sure there will be additions to this series in the future.

Caterpillar Coaster - SOLD

Caterpillar Coaster
6x6 inches
acrylic on canvas
SOLD

Did you ever notice how creepy some of the characters on kiddie rides at fairs and older amusement parks can be? Since I've started noticing, I've become fascinated by them!

This painting is for an upcoming spring show. The theme is "Parks & Recreation". One of my families favorite forms of summer recreation is to go to some of the local old amusement parks and to the old-fashioned traveling fairs and carnivals. I hope eventually to do an entire series of little scenes, little glimpses, of all the colors and sounds and the feel of these places. Right now I am working on three pieces for the exhibition to be finished by the end of this month.

ACEO - Carousel - SOLD

Another ACEO for the Art Cafe. This is based on the carousel at the Enka Fair. It is part of my Carnival Series - I am hoping to do a bunch of cards (and maybe some paintings) with images from the old-style carnivals/fairs that my kids love so much. There is something a little old-fashioned and even a little creepy in some of the imagery on the old rides and signs. I am fascinated by the colors and shapes - even the tackiness and gaudiness - that I see at these fairs.

"Carousel"
Carnival Series
3-1/2 x 2-1/2 inches
acrylic on watercolor paper
SOLD
This ACEO will be listed in my Etsy shop in late August if it doesn't sell at the cafe.
