Home Style - Small Urban Landscape Painting by Debbie Shirley

Home Style (One Way)
(Gloucester, Massachusetts)
8 x 8 inches
acrylic on canvas

What exactly would "Home Style" laundry be? Seems like a funny claim to fame! But anyways, I found myself fascinated by this building, sign and shadows each time I drove by, so I decided to paint it. A little different than my paintings that just highlight a part or a sign, but I am enjoying doing this kind of urban landscape - so there will be more!

Little Red - Acrylic Painting of VW Beetle by Debbie Shirley

Little Red
8 x 8 inches
acrylic on canvas

I enjoyed doing the small version of this old VW so much, that I decided to paint it a little larger for the Newburyport Art Association's 8 Cubed exhibition.

Do you have a classic car that you would like to have painted for a memento (or gift)? Contact me to discuss!

Moving On - Acrylic Still Life Painting of a Classic Game by Debbie Shirley

Moving On
8 x 8 inches
acrylic on cradled panel

I actually finished this piece quite a while back. However, there were a few things on it that really bugged me, so this weekend, I went into it and made the changes and am now revarnishing it. I don;t very often go back into a piece after a while has passed, but I am glad that I did with this one!

It is available in my Etsy shop.

Being Green - Small Acrylic Painting of Grapes

Being Green
8 x 8 inches
acrylic on canvas

I created a few smaller food-themed pieces to be displayed at Northshore Magazine's Grand Tasting Event. Painting food is always fun.....and with the amount of interest there was in these pieces, I am sure you will be seeing more food soon....

"Being Green" is currently on display at the Newburyport Art Association's Spring Members Show through April 25, 2015.

Left Behind - Floral Still Life Painting

Left Behind
8 x 8 inches
acrylic on canvas

I had this one in my head for a while and sketched from a set up I did a few months ago. I needed another 8 x 8" piece for the "Eight Cubed" exhibition at the Newburyport Art Association, so I thought I'd give it a go. I kept going back and forth on the painting and was very, very close to sanding and gessoing the canvas and starting again, but at one point the flower started to come together. Still not quite what I had in my head, but I think it is as far as I'm going to get at this time.

Can I say I really love doing 8 x 8 inch paintings? Such a great size!

The "Eight Cubed" exhibition runs from August 8-24 at the Newburyport Art Association in Newburyport, Massachusetts. The reception will be August 16, 6-8pm. This show was very popular last year - I am looking forward to seeing what this year will bring.

Hot Stuff - Small Acrylic Painting Kitchen Art Still Life of Peppers

Hot Stuff
8 x 8 inches
acrylic on canvas

While still working on my "retro roadside" sign paintings for the Boxford Library exhibit, I am also sneaking in two 8 x 8 paintings for the Newburyport Art Association's "Eight Cubed" exhibition. I painted a pile of red and green jalapeno peppers as a commission a few months ago and had such fun with them that I decided to revisit them slightly larger for this show. The show runs from August 8-24, 2014, with a reception on August 16th from 6-8pm at the Newburyport Art Association in Newburyport, Massachusetts.

Soda & Cigars - Painting of Vintage Neon Sign Fowles Diner Newburyport, Massachusetts

Soda & Cigars
8 x 8 inches
acrylic on 3/4" cradled panel

Working on some pieces for my upcoming solo exhibition at the Boxford Library. The exhibition is going to be pieces from my "retro roadside" series, with a few additional pieces of buildings in town. More details to come soon!

This sign is in downtown Newburyport, Massachusetts. Fowles was a diner and newsstand - and the sign dates back to the early 1900's. While the old Fowles has been taken over for a new restaurant with a different name, the new owner has kept the historic sign out front as a nod to the location's history.

Heading Home - Acrylic Still Life Painting of Vintage Game

Heading Home
8 x 8 inches
acrylic on 3/4" cradled board

Does anyone recognize this game? It was one of my favorites when I was a kid.

This will be the last 8 x 8 for this first grouping - just a few more smaller ones and hopefully these will be ready to send to Pop Gallery in about a week!

I will be picking this series back up again for a second grouping in a month or so. In the meanwhile, I will be on the look out for more vintage games....

Moving On - Acrylic Still Life Painting of Vintage Game

Moving On
8 x 8 inches
acrylic on 3/4" cradled board

Recognize this game?
I've always liked Parcheesi! And painting this old-style game board certainly gave me a new appreciation for the type of color field painting artists like Mondrian created. I painted each of those flat areas of color over at least a half dozen times. It is amazing how just the slightest change in hue can make such a big difference! It was hard to find the right colors.

This painting will be part of my vintage games & toys series heading to Pop Gallery in Gloucester early next month.

Day 4 - Falling Down - Landscape Painting

Falling Down
8 x 8 inches
acrylic on canvas

It's Day 4 of the 30 Paintings in 30 Days Challenge!

Today's entry is a piece I have been working on for MixtMedia's next exhibition. The theme is "The Four Elements" and I have chosen Water as my inspiration for two pieces. I was in Maine when I heard about the theme for the show, and the next day I was sitting at Shin Falls as my kids were playing in the water and I was racking my brain for inspiration. I looked up at the falls, and thought "Hmmm...it doesn't get more elemental than that!"

The show opens on September 20, 2013, with a reception from 6-8pm. Hope you can check it out!

Cherry Fresh - Still Life Painting

Cherry Fresh
8 x 8 inches
acrylic on canvas

Well, I haven't been posting, but I have been painting!
I've been alternating between a commission and two 8x8 paintings for the "Eight Cubed" show at Newburyport Art Association, hence nothing being done enough to post until now. This painting is for the show.

I loved the strong lighting, the richness of the red cherries and the reflections of the green bowl. It is also fun to paint "giant " cherries - in the painting, these cherries are actually closer to the size of apples!

The "Eight Cubed" show runs at the Newburyport Art Association in Newburyport, Massachusetts from August 8 to September 1, 2013.
