Adding Some Neon - New Work!

Busy, busy this week!

First off - here is my latest finished painting. This is for the Newburyport Art Association's "Eight Cubed" show, which runs from August 8 to September 1, 2013.  The opening reception is August 10th, from 7 to 9 pm. This should be a fun show of 200  8 x 8" works by member artists hung in two rows in the gallery.

On another note, I may be quiet here for the next few weeks. We will be taking off in a few days for northern Maine. Kinda off the grid, so I only get occasional internet access when we go into town - I am not sure how much posting I will do. But in September, look for a  blog redesign and all kinds of exciting things coming up!

Cherry Fresh - Still Life Painting

Cherry Fresh
8 x 8 inches
acrylic on canvas

Well, I haven't been posting, but I have been painting!
I've been alternating between a commission and two 8x8 paintings for the "Eight Cubed" show at Newburyport Art Association, hence nothing being done enough to post until now. This painting is for the show.

I loved the strong lighting, the richness of the red cherries and the reflections of the green bowl. It is also fun to paint "giant " cherries - in the painting, these cherries are actually closer to the size of apples!

The "Eight Cubed" show runs at the Newburyport Art Association in Newburyport, Massachusetts from August 8 to September 1, 2013.

Playing - Road Trip Art

I've read of many artists who paint while in the car during long trips. I have painted while in my car, but never while it was moving! I've been intrigued, and really wanted to give it a try (not while driving, silly!), but we travel with three kids and a dog and it just seemed like a bit much.

On this last trip from Massachusetts to Ohio, I brought along my colored pencils and some watercolor pencils to play with and decided to give the car thing a try, hoping it would be more manageable that acrylics. It's tough trying to keep everything balanced, and you really have to get good at observing quickly since it all flashes by so fast. I have never really tried colored pencils, so that was interesting in itself. But then I tried some watercolor pencils and created a wash with one of those brushes that holds its own water and then did a super quick sketch over it in black marker. What fun! I am not particularly pleased with what I ended up with (see below), but it was a lot of fun and very freeing. I can see filling a sketchbook with these. Would be great to try en plain air, too. I definitely will be doing more of these sketches in the future - especially when we travel!

Chit Chat - Small Acrylic Painting of Red & Yellow Peppers - Kitchen Art

Chit Chat
6 x 4 inches
acrylic on watercolor paper

Another one for the Relationships Series. These two peppers just seem like they are sharing a little gossip, don't they? I'm having so much fun with my fruits and vegetables, I may have to do some more when I finish the commission I am currently working on.

Summer craziness has set in - way too busy a schedule for summer lately! Isn't this when we are supposed to slow down a little and take it easy? Oh well, maybe next week.

This piece is currently available at West Village Provisions in West Boxford, Massachusetts.

Whispers - Still Life Acrylic Painting Kitchen Art

6 x 4 inches
acrylic on watercolor paper

It's Farmer's Market time again!

By the way, look at my haul from today:

I love, love buying fresh from the farmer!
(And I think there may be more vegetable paintings in the future......)

I actually painted this one while in Ohio. It is part of my "Relationship Series" - fruits and vegetables that make great kitchen art. This series has been especially popular at my shows, and at the last show I had a request for "MORE VEGETABLES"! I am only too happy to oblige  ;-)

This piece will be available at West Village Provisions in West Boxford, Massachusetts later this week.
