Early Iris

Early Iris
Garden Series
3.5 x 2.5 inches
acrylic on watercolor paper

Too early for MY garden!
I got really jealous seeing pictures of all the irises blooming in other parts of the country - and knowing that it will be at least a month before mine bloom, I bought a few at Trader Joes.

Irises are my favorite flower....they remind me of my grandmother. They were her favorite, too - and she managed to cultivate an enormous amount of them along with many other amazing blooms in a tiny little garden. I myself have a black thumb, but my irises (taken from a clump from my grandmother's garden) always manage to survive.

Sweet & Sour - SOLD

Sweet & Sour
2.5 x 3.5 inches
acrylic on watercolor paper
SOLD

Playing with some different colors here....I liked the combination of the lemon and grapes and tried them out on some different colored plates. I ended up liking them on the blue plate the best. I was considering submitting this to Carol Marine's Color Challenge on DailyPaintworks.com, but I don't think it is really a triadic color scheme since the grapes are more purple then red. What do you think?

Apple on Stripes - SOLD

Apple on Stripes
2.5 x 3.5 inches
acrylic on watercolor paper
SOLD

I wanted to try something a little different with this one.....I want to play a little with some patterns in my still lifes in the future, so I went for stripes with the apple for a little practice. You will be seeing a few more little 2.5 x 3.5 ones from me before I get back to the canvas - it seems that I sold a bunch of these locally this month, and need to paint some more of them to take down to our local art cafe to replenish my wall space! I also sold nine paintings at our local Spring Show - so it has been a good April here. I hope everyone is having a good month as well ;-)

Spring Floral

"Spring Floral"
2.5 x 3.5 inches
acrylic on watercolor paper

I decided to jump back into painting by working with a floral theme - especially since it has been cold and rainy here and I felt like a little spring color was in order. I tried to finish this last night, but when I looked at it, I knew I would have to revisit it today. I'm still not sure it went where I wanted to go with it....but I think I  had better move on.....

Finally Home!

Yes, we are finally back home!
I've been silent for the last week because we went on a family trip. We flew cross country to California.....visited Legoland....Joshua Tree National Park....the Grand Canyon....the Hoover Dam...ended in Las Vegas. Lots of driving, amazing scenery, and three very exhausted kids (and parents, too!).

Since I was not prepared enough to have some work ready ahead of time like many daily painters do, I haven't been able to post. You may get a few more photographs from our trip (like the one above) while I get back into the swing of things. Since it was a family trip, my paints stayed home - but I hope someday to revisit some of the same areas primarily to paint.

I am so overwhelmed by all the beauty we saw. The Grand Canyon was, of course, amazing. But I was truly stunned by the beauty of the Joshua Tree area. It is going to take my brain a while to process it all. I have a million different scenes that I want to paint, but I feel overwhelmed by trying to portray what I saw in a way that will do it justice. It may be a while before I feel ready to try.

I'm looking forward to getting back into the paint in some form tomorrow - a whole week without painting is torture! Thank you for your patience.

Hope to see you there!

The Bend in the Road

The Bend in the Road
4x4 inches
acrylic on canvas

Okay - I finally got brave and did one of the Daily Paintworks Challenges. There are a couple I would like to do, but things have been so crazy lately! When I saw the German landscape photos from Carol Marine, I knew I HAD to do that one NOW! I do not really like doing landscapes from photos, especially someone else's photos of a place I have never been, but I really wanted to give this one a try. My husband goes to Germany a lot and I am always trying to imagine what the landscape that he sees looks like. And the photo for this one actually makes me think of New England. I am also excited about doing some new landscapes soon - I am committing to myself that I will get back outside to paint this year! I haven't painted en plein air since college, and I am determined that as soon as the weather warms up, I willl be back out there!

So this painting is my warm up for landscape season. Plus with our trip out West coming up, I am sure I will be doing many more landscapes soon.....

They're off.....

I finished framing and packaged these three paintings and sent them off to West Virginia. Of course I forgot to take a picture of them framed! I like the way they look together, and I am looking forward to doing more paintings to add to the series.

The theme of the exhibition is Parks & Recreation. I hope that people feel that they fit the theme.....even though it makes sense in my head, I'm never quite sure what people are going to think!

Ticket to Ride - Carnival Series Painting

Ticket to Ride
6x6 inches
acrylic on canvas

Still putting the finishing touches on this one. This is for the upcoming Spring Show - together with the other 6x6 paintings I did with a carnival/amusement park theme ("Carousel Captive" and "Caterpillar Coaster").

In the summer we spend a lot of time going to old-fashioned fairs and carnivals with the kids. I am totally fascinated by the colors and the sounds, and also the graphics on the old rides and signage. Incredible color, yet rundown looking. Everything is brightly painted - even the ride controls and power cords seem to be a part of the color scheme. And some of the painted characters on the kiddie rides are truly creepy! Anyhow - I have many more ideas of things I what to paint on this same theme, so I'm sure there will be additions to this series in the future.

Spring Bloom SOLD

Spring Bloom
3.5 x 2.5 inches
acrylic on watercolor paper
SOLD

Another little one to end up at the Art Cafe if it is still available late this week. I am always intrigued by daffodils, yet I find them so hard to paint! But what flower says spring better? To me, it is always the sight of daffodils that lets me know that spring really has come. I am still waiting for daffodils to bloom here....these, I got from the grocery store ;-)

Good Friends - SOLD

"Good Friends"
2.5 x 3.5 inches
acrylic on watercolor paper
SOLD

Yes, the tomato and the eggplant are really just good friends.
I love the color of eggplants - the deep purple has so many other colors in it. I like to eat them, too!
This one is currrently available  -  $16.50 includes shipping in the US (see the "Buy Now" button below)
If it is still available in a few days, it will go to the Art Cafe at West Village Provisions to be exhibited for the month of April.

My postings over the next 2-3 weeks may be a bit sporatic.....I am currently getting ready for two spring shows in addition to getting my monthly work ready for the Art Cafe. Lots of matting and framing to do!
And then a long awaited family trip......updates to come.......
